< 1 Nephi 16 >
v. 3: then ye would not murmur because of the truth, and say: Thous speekest hard things against us.
Why they murmured
Nephi points out:
Why they murmured
- Truth exposed their sins: Nephi says the “truth cutteth them to the very center.”When someone is guilty, hearing truth feels like an attack instead of an invitation.
- Pride and defensiveness: Laman and Lemuel didn’t want to admit fault or humble themselves.Their pride turned correction into offense, so they murmured.
- Rejection of accountability: Truth demands change. They weren’t ready to change, so they resisted.
Nephi points out:
- The righteous don’t murmur at truth: they rejoice in it, even if it stings, because they know it’s for their good.
- The wicked murmur: because truth feels like condemnation when they don’t want to repent.
v. 4: I, Nephi, did exhort my brethren with all diligence, to keep the commandments of the Lord.
With all diligence: full, steady, wholehearted effort - carefully, persistently, and with intent, not casually or halfway
With all diligence: full, steady, wholehearted effort - carefully, persistently, and with intent, not casually or halfway
v. 13: we traveled for the space of four days, nearly a south-southeast direction, and we did pitch our tents again; and we did call the name of the place Shazer.
