< 2 Nephi 31 >
v. 2 Wherefore, the things which I have written sufficeth me, save it be the words which I must speak concerning the doctrine of Christ; wherefore, I shall speak unto you plainly, according to the plains of my prophesying.
Doctrine of Christ:
Chapters that teach clearly the doctrine of Christ:
2 Nephi 31 and 32,
3 Nephi 11 and 27
Moroni 8
Moses 6
The doctrine of Christ is the covenant process of:
1) Faith
2) Repentance
3) Baptism
4) Receiving the Holy Ghost
5) Enduring to the end in Christ(enduring in discipleship through which the grace of Christ transforms and redeems the soul)

v. 9 And again, it showeth unto the children of men the straitness of the path, and the narrowness of the gate, by which they should enter, he having set the example before them.
Strait: From Old French estreit, Latin strictus → “narrow, confined, strict”
Refers to a tight, exacting, covenant path — difficult to enter or stay on without full commitment.
Straight: From Old English streht, “not crooked, direct”
Refers to a direct, undeviating course — true, honest, without
They sound the same but are conceptually different:
Nephi uses “strait and narrow path” — not “straight and narrow.”
It echoes Jesus’s language in Matthew 7:13–14:
“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction… narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life.”
So Nephi is describing a gate that is tight or constricted, symbolizing:

Straight: From Old English streht, “not crooked, direct”
Refers to a direct, undeviating course — true, honest, without
They sound the same but are conceptually different:
- Strait → restrictive, disciplined, covenantal
- Straight → direct, true, correct in direction
Nephi uses “strait and narrow path” — not “straight and narrow.”
It echoes Jesus’s language in Matthew 7:13–14:
“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction… narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life.”
So Nephi is describing a gate that is tight or constricted, symbolizing:
- Exact obedience
- Covenant discipline
- Faithful endurance
v. 21 And now, behold my beloved brethren, this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God.
Isaiah 30 : 21 — Original Hebrew:
וְאָזְנֶיךָ תִּשְׁמַעְנָה דָּבָר מֵאַחֲרֶיךָ לֵאמֹר זֶה הַדֶּרֶךְ לְכוּ בוֹ
Transliteration: Veʾozneikha tishmaʿnā dāvar meʾaḥareikha lemor zeh haderekh lechu vo
Literal meaning: “Your ears will hear a word behind you saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”
Key word: דֶּרֶךְ (Derekh): “Derekh” means way, road, path, course, manner of life, conduct.
In Hebrew, “the way” isn’t a physical trail — it’s how one lives before God.
So Isaiah is saying: You’ll hear the Spirit’s voice guiding your conscience — this is the path of righteousness; stay on it.
The Book of Mormon Connection: 2 Nephi 31
Nephi expands this imagery directly, calling “the way” “the doctrine of Christ.”
2 Nephi 31 : 18, 21
“And now, my beloved brethren, after ye have gotten into this strait and narrow path, I would ask if all is done? … Nay; … ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ…
… This is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God.”
So....

So....
- The “way” = faith in Christ → repentance → baptism → gift of the Holy Ghost → enduring in faith.
- It’s not just a way of living; it’s the covenant pattern — the one path that leads to eternal life.
