Jeju island
Jeju Island is South Korea’s most beloved island escape — a place where volcanic landscapes, turquoise seas, and a deeply rooted local culture come together in striking harmony. Dominated by the massive shield volcano Hallasan, the island offers endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, from hiking through misty forests and exploring lava tubes to standing atop seaside cliffs watching waves crash against black basalt rock. Iconic sights like Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak), hidden waterfalls, and dramatic coastal drives make Jeju feel both cinematic and timeless, while its mild climate keeps the island inviting year-round.
Beyond its natural beauty, Jeju has a distinct identity shaped by resilience and tradition. The island is famous for its haenyeo (female free diversja diving women), fresh seafood, mandarins, and unique stone “grandfather” statues known as dol hareubang, which symbolize protection and good fortune. Food lovers can savor everything from charcoal-grilled black pork to abalone porridge, while travelers seeking relaxation will find tranquil beaches, boutique resorts, and quiet villages tucked between fields of stone walls. Whether you’re chasing adventure, culture, or calm, Jeju Island feels like a world apart — and yet, perfectly balanced.
Jeju Island Map
Some people recommend renting a car so you can zoom around the island and see the different beaches, hiking spots, mountains etc. It's not a bad idea. If you want to get away from the port, you'll spend enough in bus or taxi fees to rent a car and have a lot more freedom. Plus, if you have friends to split the cost with, it'll be way less expensive and more fun. If you only have a day to see one of the most beautiful parts of Korea, it's the thing to do.

Hallasan National Park
Home to South Korea's tallest mountain. The park is full of forested trails, volcanic landscapes, great viewpoints. There are lots of short hikes but also long summit hikes if you are a speedy hiker. About 40 minutes from the port. The hike to the summit is brutal and long, so a shorter hike here may be worth it. |
