Floyd's BathTub Waffles

The bathtub is optional
My grandfather Floyd was a genius.  I remember the first time I saw him mixing waffle batter in the bathtub or making his infamous one week oatmeal.  It was a sight to behold.  Say what you will, the man was ahead of his time.  
Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup salted butter (melted)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp sugar (or a bit more)
  • ​1 canoe paddle
  • 1 bathtub
  • 1 freezer
  • tons of saran-wrap
Directions
  1. Take out all the ingredients and get them to room temperature.
  2. Turn on the waffle iron.
  3. If using a bathtub to mix, make sure it is clean and free of unwanted debris.  Floyd’s waffles sometimes contained bits o’ stuff.
  4. Melt the butter and then set it aside to cool.  Don’t let hot butter cook the eggs!
  5. Mix the dry ingredients and then make a well.
  6. Beat the eggs until frothy and then mix in the other wet ingredients.
  7. Pour the wet ingredients into the well and fold it all together until well mixed.  
  8. Cook until you achieve desired level of doneness.  
Tips for Success
  • ​If you use salted butter, then leave out the salt called for later in the recipe, or else you may get something too salty.  If you use unsalted butter, then add about 1/2 tsp salt.  One time, Sara’s college roommate made cookies and accidentally substituted salt for the sugar.  News of this mistake made it around campus instantly and she left college unmarried.  Coincidence?  I don’t think so.
During WWII, Floyd was stationed in Italy with the US Army Air Corps. He made a boat out of a bomb so he could go fishing.  There's a reason why they were called the greatest generation.
